What To Look For When Choosing A Lawyer To Handle Your Case
Finding the right lawyer is the most important step in obtaining a reasonable settlement of a personal injury or death claim. Insurance companies (and lawyers who defend them) know the personal injury lawyers who are inexperienced and unwilling to file a lawsuit and take a case to trial. Based upon that information, insurance companies offer those lawyers less money to settle cases hoping that the lawyer will simply convince the client to accept the low offer so the lawyer will not have to file suit.
So, when trying to find the right lawyer, not only consider those who have experience in handling your type of matter, but also whether the lawyer has ever filed a lawsuit in your type of case and whether the lawyer has time to handle your case.
Some indicators of the type of lawyer or law firms to avoid are follows:
- They handle other types of matters that are not related in any way to personal injury cases.
- They do not file personal injury lawsuits, and instead refer their personal injury cases to other lawyers or law firms when a lawsuit is required.
- They are a “high volume” law firm that handle too many cases at one time.
When in doubt, do not be afraid to ask the lawyer you are considering hiring about any of the above indicators.
